Helvecio Mota, PhD, DABR

Dr. Helvecio Mota is a senior clinical physicist board-certified in Therapeutic Radiological Physics by the American Board of Radiology with more than 30 years experience in the safe use of radiation for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. He is graduated from the Institute of Biophysics at UFRJ Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and completed his postdoctoral studies in radiation therapy physics at Roswell Park Cancer Institute at Buffalo, NY. Prior to joining Saint Mary’s, Dr. Mota was the chief medical physicist at the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Carolinas Medical Center in Concord, providing physics leadership and support for radiotherapy and radiosurgery treatment of patients, including clinical trials.

Former clinical associate Professor at East Carolina University (ECU) School of Medicine, and leading member of the stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) team at the Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC, Dr. Mota held also the appointment of associate director of physics of the Gamma Knife program. At ECU, he has been an active clinical and researcher faculty working and implementing cutting edge technology in dosimetry, image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), SRS/SBRT, brachytherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT). In 2008 he was the lead physicist that started the CyberKnife program at ECU. As scholar, he has taught in the Medical Physics graduate program of the ECU, and throughout his career, he has supervised students for Master’s and Ph.D. degrees, authored and co-authored several books and monographs and over 50 scholarly articles in major publications, and lectured at more than 50 invited talks around the world.

Since July 2013 he hold the appointment of certified medical physicist at Saint Mary’s Center for Cancer, working with a multidisciplinary team of specialized physicians, physicists, nurses and therapists, performing radiation calculations and physics support for SRS and SBRT radiosurgery with the CyberKnife® system, ensuring that the prescribed treatments are accurately and safely planned and delivered.
