Start Your Journey To Recovery

Leading-edge radiation treatment options for a brighter future

A diagnosis of kidney cancer can be surprising. Since there are usually no signs of the disease in its early stages, when common symptoms like fatigue and weight loss appear, they may seem to overlap with those of other illnesses.

Once diagnosed with kidney cancer, you may have concerns about complications from kidney cancer, including kidney failure and the spread of the cancer to your lungs, liver, and bones.

The radiation oncologists at our Akumin centers are experienced in treating kidney cancer. Whether you prefer not to undergo surgery, or have medically inoperable kidney tumors, our physicians can treat your kidney tumors with radiation therapy and have you on the road to recovery.

Understanding Kidney Cancer

Early detection and appropriate treatment can make a difference

Kidney tumors, also called renal tumors, are growths in the kidneys that can be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), also known as renal cell cancer, is the most common type of malignant kidney tumor. According to the American Cancer Society, about 9 out of 10 kidney cancers are renal cell carcinomas.

Though kidney cancer usually does not have symptoms in its early stages, over time, as the tumor grows, more serious symptoms like blood in the urine or pain or a lump in the lower back may emerge. Kidney cancer is usually found by chance during an abdominal imaging test for other complaints.

Most people with kidney cancer are older. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 64 with most people being diagnosed between ages 65 and 74. Kidney cancer is very uncommon in people younger than age 45.

For older patients who are not good candidates for surgery due to other health complications, radiation therapy is an excellent treatment option for kidney cancer.

Targeted Treatments To Fight Kidney Cancer

Precision and minimal invasiveness make radiation therapy an effective option

Precise and targeted
Radiation therapy uses sophisticated imaging and targeting technologies which allow the radiation oncologist to effectively destroy cancer cells in the kidney while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue
Customizable treatment
Radiation therapy can be customized to meet the unique needs of each patient, taking into account factors such as the size and location of the cancer, overall health, and previous treatments the patient may have undergone
Symptom relief
Radiation therapy can also help alleviate symptoms associated with kidney cancer, such as pain and swelling, providing patients with improved quality of life and a more manageable daily routine
