National Wellness Month: Make Time for Preventive Screening

Published: July 2026

August is National Wellness Month, but what is wellness really? If you asked your friends, family, or even your coworkers, wellness would look different for everyone, but for us, it has to include preventive screening to stay healthy. Not just because we’re a radiology company, but because we see firsthand every day how preventive screening saves lives.

Why Do So Many People Miss Recommended Screenings?

Despite the evidence supporting early detection and countless public awareness campaigns encouraging people to get screened, millions of Americans still don’t. Research shows we all have our own reasons, but most commonly they include lack of time, scheduling challenges, fear of receiving bad news, concerns about cost, and difficulty finding a convenient location.

There’s no doubt it’s hard to find time to care for yourself, especially if you’re already caring for others, whether that’s children, parents, or an ailing spouse.

But delaying screening can mean missing the opportunity to detect disease at its most treatable stage. Whether it’s breast cancer, lung cancer, or osteoporosis, treatment works best when screenings happen before symptoms appear.

Moving Beyond Barriers

The good news is that many of these barriers can be overcome. That’s where we can help. Our goal is to make preventive care easier to access, schedule, and complete.

Across our national network of outpatient imaging centers, we focus on removing some of the most common obstacles that prevent people from getting the care they need:

Convenience

Many patients cite busy schedules as a reason for delaying preventive screenings. Our broad network of imaging centers helps bring care closer to where patients live and work, reducing travel time and making scheduling more convenient. With more than 110 imaging centers across the United States, Akumin brings care closer to where patients live and work. Many locations are conveniently situated near hospitals, schools, and shopping, with expanded evening and weekend hours to help fit screening into your schedule.

We also have the nation’s largest mobile imaging fleet. Have you seen our trucks on the road? These aren’t just trailers transporting equipment. They’re bringing lifesaving imaging services directly into communities, making it easier for patients to access care closer to home instead of traveling long distances for screening and diagnostic exams.

One of the newest ways we’re expanding access is through our relocatable Akumin AXIS® portfolio. These units function as fully operational imaging clinics, helping healthcare partners bridge the gap when funding for a permanent facility isn’t yet available or while new construction is underway.

Each unit is a complete imaging suite featuring advanced MRI, PET/CT, or LINAC technology for cancer treatment. Designed with a welcoming patient lounge, change rooms, and thoughtfully planned clinical space, they provide a modern, comfortable environment while delivering the same high-quality care patients expect from a permanent imaging center.

Comfort and Patient Experience

We know that undergoing diagnostic imaging or preventive screening can be an anxious experience. Whether it’s your first appointment or one of many because of your health history, making time for care isn’t always at the top of your to-do list. Our spaces are meant to provide a welcoming environment focused on patient comfort, education, and support throughout the process. And every month, we receive thousands of five-star reviews recognizing the compassion and care our Team Members provide.

Advanced Technology

When it comes to your health, it’s natural to want confidence in the care you’re receiving. Advances in diagnostic imaging have made many exams more accurate and effective. For example, 3D mammography is an advanced screening technology that can help detect breast cancer and may reduce unnecessary callbacks for additional imaging compared with traditional 2D mammography alone.

Access to Specialized Screening

Did you know? The screenings you need may change throughout your life based on your age, family history, lifestyle, and other risk factors. That’s why it’s important to talk with your healthcare provider about which preventive screenings are right for you.

We offer a comprehensive range of screening services, including low-dose CT lung cancer screening, 3D mammography, breast MRI, DEXA bone density exams, and other advanced imaging designed to support preventive care.

The Wellness Challenge This August

This National Wellness Month, challenge yourself to schedule one preventive screening you’ve been putting off. Diagnostic screening takes less time than most people think, but the impact could last a lifetime.

We believe prevention isn’t just about detecting diseases. It’s about protecting the life you’re working hard to build every day.
